Navarathri Festival in Madison,Wisconsin
by Heidi M. Pascual
Madison-area Indian Americans gathered at the home of Dr.
Swaminathan and Lalita Balachandran on Sept. 27 to celebrate
Navarathri through offerings of purely classical music. For about three
hours, an intergenerational group of volunteer performers hit the stage
with their musical talents that awed this writer no end.
Navarathri (nine days) is the most celebrated event of the year in the
Hindi tradition. It’s the time to worship the spiritual force, Durga; the
goddess of wealth, Lakshmi; and the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati.
While every region has its own myth and reason for Navarathri, the
common belief is, it’s the triump of good versus evil. (Visit www.
