Endorsing Peng Her for WI Lieutenant Governor

When I heard the good news that Peng Her is seeking to be Democratic Party's candidate for Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor, happiness and pride suddenly occupied my whole being, and I had to stop anything I was doing at that moment, just to look back at those precious times I spent in Madison when I was introduced to Peng and later, how our acquaintance grew into friendship with mutual respect and admiration.
Peng -- and his wife -- used to own Taste of Asia Restaurant along East Washington Ave. where I held the launching of my magazine, Asian Wisconzine, in the latter part of 2004. I found Peng as a very intelligent man, whose socio-political ideas could force one to collect his/her deeply-thought knowledge in local and national spheres in a breeze. His experience in Laos during the Vietnam war was unique, providing him that strength of character and resolve that not everybody was fortunate to get in life. Being a Hmong --

The Demographic and Economic Impacts of DACA Recipients: Fall 2021 Edition

In 2012, the Obama administration created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to protect certain young undocumented immigrants from deportation. Through DACA—in which applicants receive a temporary stay of deportation and work authorization—more than 825,000 people who arrived in the United States as young children were able to access more stability in their lives. DACA has enabled recipients to pursue higher education, become homeowners, and earn higher wages. Pandemic brought life lessons for Jai Khanna, UW-Madison's winter commencement student speaker

Graduating senior Jai Khanna is still tweaking the speech he’ll give Sunday as the student speaker for UW–Madison’s winter commencement. But he knows one message he wants to impart: Live life in the moment.


It was a lesson the international student says he was forced to learn during the pandemic. When COVID-19 struck in March of 2020, Khanna decided to stay in Madison and finish a few projects instead of quickly booking a flight back to his native India. By the time reality sunk in, borders had closed.


“It was a scary time — there was so much uncertainty,” Khanna says. “But I also have a lot of great memories from that time. Those of us left behind had to manage and adapt. We became very close.” ​-- READ MORE
