WASHINGTON, DC – Today, on the first anniversary of the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol, the Chairs of the Congressional Tri-Caucus – composed of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), and Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) – released the following joint statement:
“One year ago today, a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The insurrectionists included far-right militants and white supremacists groups fueled by racist and xenophobic beliefs and displaying symbols of white supremacy and hate as they vandalized the Capitol.
“We are grateful that Congress fulfilled its constitutional duty and democracy prevailed. As we reflect back on this day, we urge support for the Tri-Caucus resolution condemning the bigotry displayed and voiced during the January 6th siege on the U.S. Capitol, which was introduced to the House last February, after the January 6th attack. The resolution acknowledges the prominent role white supremacists, domestic terrorists, and certain elected officials played in planning, encouraging, and leading the attack.
“It is critical we uphold and protect the integrity of our elections. The House of Representatives passed both H.R.1, the For The People Act and H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to strengthen our democracy and protect voting rights. The Senate must act now and for the good of our democracy, pass voting rights legislation.”
