National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) Statement

January 15--NCAPA issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s rescission of executive orders, including Executive Order 14031, “Advancing Equity, Justice, and Opportunity for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders”:

“As leaders representing Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities nationwide, we are profoundly alarmed by President Trump’s decision to rescind dozens of critical executive orders on his first day in office. These sweeping rollbacks threaten to tear immigrant families apart, exacerbate gender discrimination, and strip communities of color of vital representation and opportunities for advancement – moving our nation backwards on his very first day in office. In particular, we are extremely disappointed that the president has moved to dismantle the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI).

The Trump Administration’s efforts to erase any references to diversity, equity, and inclusion are a thinly veiled effort to declare that racism no longer exists, and a blatant attempt to absolve our government of its responsibility to dutifully address and mitigate the ongoing nature of systemic racism. Unilaterally deciding to ignore these very real issues represents a failure in empathy and leadership. NCAPA unequivocally opposes the rescission of these executive orders, which dismantle hard-won civil rights and protections that communities of color have tirelessly fought for since this country’s inception. We stand united and resolute in our commitment to defending the rights of AANHPI communities and ensuring that we can all live free from fear and discrimination.”
