WASHINGTON — On Monday, March 7th, the AAPI Progress and Education Fund, the 501c3 arm of the AAPI Victory Alliance, held a press conference presenting focus group findings on the impact of mis- and dis-information on the AAPI community.
The study consisted of five AAPI sub ethnicities—Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Indian American swing voters—in Texas, as well as a mixed-AAPI group of swing voters under 30. Conducted to uncover the impact misinformation has on AAPIs, the study revealed many key findings that will help social and political organizations better understand the similarities and differences between AAPI sub-ethnicities as well as the generational divide within the community.
AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:
“This inaugural study kicked off the first of many studies AAPI Victory Alliance plans to conduct in the future, and I’m thrilled by the critical information the focus groups revealed about the rapidly-growing AAPI electorate.
"Initially, we sought to uncover the sources AAPIs—dis-aggregated by sub-ethnicity—rely on for information and the implications those sources have on different AAPI communities. After conducting the study, it’s important to recognize that there is still so much to learn. We must expand future research beyond our initial focus areas of the true implications of mis- and dis-information, how conflicting information impacts AAPIs, and how to best engage with the sub-ethnicities comprising the AAPI electorate come future elections.”
“Since the 2020 election, AAPI voters have demonstrated time and time again that we have the power to shape elections and, especially, that AAPIs can be the margin of victory in critical electoral states. This study uncovered key issues that AAPI’sface when consuming information. The issue to consider now is how to best civically engage subsets of the AAPI community in the future, a question we’re excited to answer as AAPI Victory Alliance conducts future studies.”
