March 5 -- On Super Tuesday—with 15 states holding primary elections and representing over one half of all Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) eligible voters (7.46 million out of 14.6 million nationally)—APIAVote and AAPI Data are proud to release the latest version of their State Voter Factsheets. The 2024 voter demographic reports, available for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, contain critical information about the size and growth of the AAPI electorate, as well as key issues and challenges affecting Asian American and Pacific Islander voters, including language access and various socioeconomic challenges.
“Over the last decade, AAPIs have time and time again shown they are a political force to be reckoned with. Without access to data and resources to understand our communities, however, efforts to engage and empower our communities are in vain,” said Christine Chen, Executive Director and co-Founder of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote). “That’s why these State Voter Factsheets are so crucial. When we can better analyze the AAPI electorate, we can better empower AAPI voices and ensure that civic engagement investments align with the priorities and concerns of our diverse community.”
The 2024 State Voter factsheets are part of a larger groundswell community effort called Power In Numbers, which seeks to draw attention and visibility to the growing number of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders nationally, and in various states and localities.
“The 2024 elections are critical to shaping the long-term future of our country, and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander voters will play an important role in shaping that future,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, founder and executive director of AAPI Data. “News media, political campaigns, and nonpartisan organizations all recognize the growing strength and power in numbers of the AAPI electorate, and we hope that these state factsheets can motivate greater investments in civic engagement.”
As in prior years, APIAVote and its various state and local partners will use the State Voter Factsheets to educate and motivate voters and those investing in voter engagement. APIAVote is collaborating with partners across 32 states to launch and implement a comprehensive, multi-touch voter engagement program targeting AAPI households. This includes multilingual direct mail outreach followed by phone banking, text messaging, door-to-door canvassing, and multilingual hotline support to address voter questions. Additionally, partnerships with universities aim to boost participation among the crucial young AAPI voter segment. AAPI VOTER DEMOGRAPHICS BY STATE
Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders collectively represent one of the United States’ fastest growing racial demographic cohorts. With over 24 million AAPI individuals (including mixed-race) residing across the nation, this rapidly expanding population has concurrently become the nation’s fastest-growing voter bloc. The 2020 presidential election and 2022 midterm elections witnessed AAPI voters participate at unprecedented turnout rates, exceeding the margin of victory in many voting battleground areas.
In recognition of AAPI’s rapid growth and impact, these state-specific AAPI voter demographic fact sheets are updated every two years.
