2022 Pahiyas Festival of Lucban, Quezon

It is always amazing for me to witness local festivities in my original country, the Philippines. I had the opportunity to be in one last May 15th, and it was in the town of Lucban, province of Quezon, a few kilometers south of Manila. In honor of their patron saint, San Isidro, the people of Lucban celebrate a harvest festival known as Pahiyas, which always attracts foreign and local tourists alike. Why? It’s so different from other harvest festivals because the houses are decorated with all kinds of farm produce designed in so many beautiful ways. -- READ MORE

Education Policies Need To Address the Unique Needs of Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities

By Roby Chatterji and Jessica Yin

The Asian American and the Pacific Islander communities in the United States are growing at a dramatic pace. Recent data from the 2020 census as well as a recent Pew Research Center analysis show that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are two of the top three fastest-growing racial or ethnic groups in the country. At the current rate of growth, Asian Americans are projected to become the nation’s largest immigrant group by 2055, with roots in some two dozen countries. While some Asian American and Pacific Islander communities represent relatively new immigrant groups to the United States, others have a longstanding and deep history in this country -- CLICK STORY TO READ MORE

The Biden administration is convinced that the new framework is an opportunity to showcase what senior U.S. officials have described as a “foreign policy for the middle class,”

The Recent Rise in Violent Crime Is Driven by Gun Violence

By Eugenio Weigend Vargas

The rising violent crime rates over the past two years is a major issue that elected officials must address immediately. While many have blamed the criminal justice reform movement for the rise in violent crime, the fact is that these increases in violent crime can largely be attributed to an alarming escalation in gun violence. If elected officials are serious about stopping violent crime, they need to prioritize and support stronger gun laws. -- CLICK STORY TO READ MORE

The Supreme Court’s Extreme Majority Risks Turning Back the Clock on Decades of Progress and Undermining Our Democracy

By Ben Olinsky and Grace Oyenubi

As the Supreme Court nears the end of its term, it is poised to hand down a string of decisions that carry a deeply disturbing theme. Much attention has appropriately been given to the stunning draft decision reported on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which would overturn Roe v. Wade. Yet in other cases, too, Americans will likely see significant retrenchments of their rights, including those to clean air, religious freedom, effective governance, and to live safe from the scourge of gun violence. Dobbs will not be an isolated case of overreach nor of attacks on cherished liberties. Instead, it offers a stark preview of the plans the court’s radical majority has for the future. -- CLICK STORY TO READ MORE

In Memory of Uvalde Victims

From the Desk of Thu Nguyen, OCA Executive Director

When we were four years old, 13 students and a teacher were killed in the Columbine High School massacre. Our parents were struck with fear, but at least we were quite a few years from high school. We began “active shooter” drills in elementary school - learning to hide in a corner under the teacher’s desk and away from windows. -- READ MORE

Strengthening Blue Carbon Solutions in US Ocean Policy

By Anne Christianson

Nature is increasingly recognized as foundational to climate action, especially the push to hold global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels in order to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. The climate mitigation and adaptation benefits of blue carbon—carbon stored in marine ecosystems—is a growing part of U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) climate dialogues. However, not all blue carbon “solutions” are created equal.--READ MORE

Students Reflect on Christine Chen’s Study Group at Harvard IOP

We’re proud of Christine and the legacy she established at Harvard’s Institute of Politics! The spring semester she spent as a resident fellow allowed her to inspire and educate the next generation of leaders about the history of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, how our communities have built power over the decades, and what the future holds. Most impactful was Christine leveraging her network to bring leaders from the community so her students were able to gain insight into what it is like to direct an organization like APIAVote.-- READ MORE
