We are so excited after a successful National Day of Action and Healing on Friday, March 26th! Our coordinated effort resulted in the hashtag #StopAsianHate reaching 1.1 billion online. The day of action activated thousands of AAPI groups, and the tremendous support of Asian community allies, corporations, elected officials, cultural influencers and business leaders from across sectors. PIX We want to thank Snapchat who worked with APIAVote to create a #StopAsianHate lens that resulted in 16 Million impressions from the Snapchat audience across the United States! Thank you SnapChat!
The day also saw public pledges totaling $25.8 million to Asian American organizations, nearly doubling the investments made in all of 2020, according to Candid. While this is an important show of support during a time of crisis, in order to effectively address the racial barriers that hold back Asian Americans we hope that this engagement and investment continues past this moment. More than1,000 Asian American business leaders came together to publish a statement in the Wall Street Journal to condemn anti-Asian hate. Collectively they are committing over $10 million to support and empower AAPI community based organizations.

In February, Comcast NBC Universal, NBC Bay Area & Telemundo 48 provided an initial investment of $100,000 for the launch of the Solidarity Fund managed by Asian Pacific Fund. Recently Verizon announced their investment of $5 million to leading organizations on the front lines of advancing racial equality, and donating $5 million in ad inventory from Verizon Media to advocate for Asian rights and mental health, as well as promote small businesses across the Asian community.
AT&T and WarnerMedia pledged $7 million to aid in the fight for social justice. This includes supporting AAPI organization and the production of 4 public service announcements that will be shared via the company’s cable, digital, streaming and social platforms.
APIAVote is excited to deepen our partnership with Sony Music’s Global Social Justice Fund. Their support to #StopAsianHate will focus on efforts to take action, report incidents & support legislation that condemns hate crimes.
As we move forward and build on the #StopAsianHate movement, it is important to know that all communities of color have reported experiencing similar rates of hate incidents in 2021. The factors driving these incidents and experiences with racial discrimination, however, are distinct according to the results of a national survey on Anti-Asian Hate Incidents and the Broader Landscape of Racial Bias conducted by APIAData and Survey Monkey. While Asian American exclusion is often built on the perception that they are “perpetual foreigners,” representing Asian countries no matter how many generations they have lived in the United States. Latinos have also faced similar acts of othering and exclusion, with the presumption that they are undocumented immigrants even though a majority are born in the United States. By contrast, anti-Black prejudice is built on extremely pernicious stereotypes about violence and criminality, used to justify centuries of violent subjugation of Black lives from slavery, to Jim Crow, to modern-day segregation and incarceration.
As we continue breaking down barriers that hold back Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders from civic discourse and participation, we must also fight against the systemic racial barriers that divide our collective power.
