A Story on Probation in the Philippines:

Caught between hard choices: Imprisonment or freedom under probation

By Heidi M. Pascual

Editor’s Note: This story revolves around a drug addict in my hometown who has been released from prison middle of last year, how he’s behaving while waiting for approval of his application for probation, how our community is dealing with him, and what our local Parole and Probation Authority is doing to fulfill its functions. Peter’s Story Peter is a good-looking man, medium built, armed with an engaging smile and eyes that “speak” to anyone he wants to be with. At 35, he has had several women -- decent and pretty professionals, hardworking employees, as well as flirty, ill-repute girls (for fun). Peter boasts of having five children with five different women, all of whom are being taken care of by their respective relatives, all mother-side. He doesn’t have any of his children with him because Peter has not been employed for years, and he could not, or would not, take a job he considers “unfit” for his good looks. -- CLICK TITLE TO READ MORE

Celebrating AANHPIHM with Census Data

Of the many ways to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, APIAVote is celebrating May by using our platform to allow our communities to proudly say: “Here We Are”. Throughout May, we will highlight what community is and what it looks like across the U.S.. And what better place to start our celebration than to highlight the recent U.S. Census racial data? The data shows that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders continue to be the fastest growing racial group with Asian Americans growing 82.2% from 2010 to 2019, and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities growing 72.2%! Join our call to say #HereWeAre and help us continue our work to build political power for AANHPI communities.

DNC on AAPI Heritage Month

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, DNC Vice Chair Sen. Tammy Duckworth and DNC AAPI Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong released the following statement to commemorate AAPI Heritage Month:

“During AAPI Heritage Month, we celebrate the diverse fabric of the AAPI community and their invaluable contributions to America. From helping build this nation to influencing its culture, the AAPI community is an essential thread in the fabric of the United States. Over the last decade, the community has seen so many successes, growing representation in Congress from less than half a dozen to over twenty members, including two AAPI women in the Senate.

“We cannot turn away from the increased physical, verbal and online attacks AAPI people have suffered over the course of the last year, spurred by hateful and xenophobic rhetoric that falsely blames them for the COVID-19 pandemic. Hate has no place in this country, and combating hatred against the AAPI community can and should be bipartisan. We applaud Congress for taking action, under the leadership of Senator Hirono and Congresswoman Grace Meng, and passing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, legislation that will help improve the federal government's response to race-based violence against AAPI Americans.

“As Democrats, we know our nation's diversity is our greatest strength. We must identify and root out systemic racism and xenophobia and give effective resources to law enforcement agencies to combat the growing number of attacks targeting the AAPI community. We must work with communities across the country to improve reporting of race-based violence and encourage prosecutors to hold perpetrators accountable to the fullest extent of the law. We will continue to stand in solidarity with AAPI communities across the country to end this senseless hate.”
